Jim Mattes has been president and CEO of Grande Ronde hospital since 1984. In that time he has had major impact – helping save the hospital more than $5 million dollars in interest payments through debt restructuring, as well as directing several significant hospital expansion and remodel projects. In 1992, the La Grande Union County Chamber of Commerce recognized Jim as the “Business Man of the Year.”

Prior to joining Grande Ronde Hospital, Mattes served as the CEO of North Lincoln Hospital, in Lincoln City, OR. While there, he completed his master’s degree in Hospital Administration, receiving two graduate education research awards. In 1981, he was selected as the North Lincoln Hospital Medical Staff, “Man of the Year.” He began his career at Malheur Memorial Hospital in Nyssa, OR as the hospital’s chief financial officer, and one year later, in 1975, became the hospital’s administrator.

Mattes is a member of the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS) Board of Directors, the La Grande Rotary Club and the La Grande Nazarene Church. He is active in Boy Scouts and serves as an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 511 and as a member of the Eagle Scout Board of Review.

He earned a masters degree in hospital administration in 1980 from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn. and a bachelor of science degree in mathematics in 1973 from Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore. In 1979, Mattes was awarded the Ross Laboratories Graduate Research Award for best hospital administration graduate thesis for U.S. universities, and he received the second place Sabra M. Hamilton Award for best research contribution to the health care industry from hospital administration graduate programs.
